Mountain snowNot Mount Washington's first snow of the season, but snow extending to a lower elevation. This is at sunset and the next was was taken after sunrise the next morning.
Fleeting shades of orangeWe had our first frost last Tuesday. This is late for us.
Remember that fire tower from a previous post? Clouds were swirling around North Kearsarge around sunset and I shot a series of images showing it in and out of the clouds. Here is a tight crop of one image. To make this image, I braced the Nikon D600 with the 70-300 VR against a tree. The exposure was 1/160 sec., f/ 5.6, ISO 100. Between the bracing and the VR, the image stayed clear even at that shutter speed.
Late afternoon Saturday there was an opportunity for a short hike up along Mad River in Evans Notch. From the clearing at the bottom:
Peregrine falcons nest on those cliffs. An old fireplace remaining from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) days, I think. The CCC's built the road through the notch.
The trail:
The goal for the expedition was this small waterfall. I didn't make it up to the much larger waterfall. Here Mad River does not seem to be living up to its name. Exposure times were very long because of the cloud cover and it was later in the day.
YellowsNow we are on to the yellows and rusts of the beeches, oaks, and other trees that are late to change.
Here are beech leaves. You can see how the colors change from the outer leaves gradually to the inner leaves. Eventually the leaves will all be that coppery color and hang on into the winter. In winter, those copper leaves rattle in the crisp breezes.
Later autumn
Color in the skyYesterday morning I went to get a view to the west to look for the moon setting. But:
Yes, clouds. So I looked around to the north and saw this:
Color in the sky, a rainbow, to complement the color of the leaves. The rainbow is over Lord's Hill with Pine Hill to the left. I think this might be one of the few rainbows I have seen in the morning. The rising sun also highlighted the abandoned fire tower on North Kearsarge.
Later in the afternoon:
No, the car is not going very fast, it is just a slow shutter speed that makes it look that way. Wednesday I finally got around to making some updates to my website. No photos were added, but links were added and updated, including a link to this blog and a link to a magazine that publishes my work, Lake Living magazine. This issue I have photos to go with an article on a lumber mill which was recently closed. Check through back issues to see more articles and cover photos. |
