Jockey Cap in winter
North Kearsarge -- I still haven't climbed it. East RoyceNow for a post-Thanksgiving hike up East Royce on the Maine-New Hampshire border. The road through Evans Notch (ME 113) was still open, albeit a little icy just over the top.
The parking area is to the left just where the road dips out of site and the trail climbs off to the left. First there is a waterfall:
And upward -- it is a mile and a half of non-stop ascent. The lower quarter was free of snow and ice.
And then it got challenging.
Daylight was running out so I didn't proceed beyond this point on the top. The real summit is in the woods and the north viewpoint was hard to get to on my last trip.
A panorama including Kezar Lake on the left, Kearsarge North in the center, and Baldface on the right.
A snowy Mount Washington
And carefully head back down.

Kezar Lake in Lovell
White NovemberLast night:
This morning:
Moose Pond, West Bridgton, Maine Baldface Circle Trail
Our goal for the day was to take the Baldface Circle Trail (again) and Bicknell Ridge Trail clockwise over South Baldface (on the left) and North Baldface. So here we go.
Emerald Pool
Why do I often contrast white birch tree trunks with red maple leaves?
Starting up the ledges.
Mountain ash berries with West Royce and East Royce in the background. The state line between Maine and New Hampshire runs between the Royces.
A view of Evans Notch (the Royces on the left and Caribou further out to the right of center) from the top of the Ledges.
Mountain Pond and Kearsarge in the background.
South Baldface summit
Looking over to North Baldface while on the trail between South and North.
Looking back to South Baldface. Kezar Lake in Lovell shows in the background and Pleasant Mountain is visible in the haze.
The summit of North Baldface with Mount Washington in the background.
The Ledges which we had to climb, and the fields of Cold River Valley.
Wild River Valley and the Carter-Moriah Range. Mount Washington is there too.
Not far down the Bicknell Ridge Trail we spotted a Boreal Chickadee. Perhaps he was surprised by the warm weather too.
Wintergreen berries
Back to the river. Now a slideshow of trail photos:
We had a great autumn day to enjoy this, perhaps my favorite, trail in the White Mountains. |
