Mountain blueberriesIn 2014, the blueberries were about peak at this location on August 15. This year they were past prime on August 5. (See my post for back then here.) Of course we didn't know that when we started the hike. This year it is much drier:
It is very dry, in fact. Here are the blueberries:
More rain probably would have helped them too.
We stayed until just about sunset.
West Bridgton, Mount Tom in Fryeburg, and the mountains beyond into New Hampshire
Mount Washington
And a bonus from the ride home:
Can anyone tell me what planet that is? Travel - South Park CitySouth Park City is part ghost town, part museum at the edge of the town of Fairplay, Colorado. Some of the old buildings are at their original site, other structures and artifacts were brought here. The dry climate at almost 10000 feet elevation seems to keep everything well-preserved. If you get to visit here, leave plenty of time to explore all the displays.
This old cheese in the general store brought to mind the cheese tale in Owen Wister's "The Virginian".
A very ornate soda fountain from 1924.
This is how photographers traveled in the late 19th century. The wagon belonged to Von van Epps. Included in South Park City is a wagon collection, recreation of a mine and milling operation, and many buildings full of artifacts and equipment on display. The hand-pump vacuum cleaner was an interesting find as was a display showing the process for assaying gold ore, and a wagon full of old wood water pipes. A bonus photo below, the Georgetown Loop Railroad seen from a turn-off of I-70. This is the last of the trip photos unless I post some from the routes traveled between these sites later. I hope you have enjoyed the scenery with me.
Travel - St. ElmoSt. Elmo is a well-known ghost town in the mountains near Buena Vista, Colorado. It is still privately owned and maintained.
The road into the mountains to St. Elmo seems to be open all winter, although it is probably difficult traveling by car when there is much snow.
The main street through the town. A river runs behind these buildings and there are more buildings on the other side of the river. That road would continue up to Tin Cup, but it was not cleared of snow yet.
The Whitney Forbes Maine house made of logs
Details:
A restored house on the other side of the river.
When we arrived it was sunny, but afternoon thunderstorms soon started to arrive.
The store, which is open for visitors, was mobbed by the broad-tailed hummingbirds at the feeders.
Nearby is a National Forest Campground and the Iron City Cemetery.
Would you like a photo of one of the hummingbirds? Travel - Monarch PassBack to entries from the Colorado trip. This is Monarch Pass. Besides the road that goes through the Pass, there is a gondola ride to 12,000 feet.
2016 Paris Hill, Maine Founder's Day posterIt is time for the Paris Hill, Maine Founder's Day event again. The poster is made from photos taken last September. A neighbor on Paris Hill generously allowed us to photograph the car in front of their home. Here comes our poster child:
I tried several compositions in order to have plenty of options for the final poster.
And then the car went back to its garage where you will be able to see it this coming Saturday.
The final poster for 2016. A run of 100 posters will be for sale at the event and through the library's website afterward if there are any left over.
