Road trip #3 Skyline DriveMy base for visiting Skyline Drive was Harrisonburg, Virginia. The first day we drove out on Highway 33 to Swift Run Gap and took Skyline Drive north. The ranger at the entrance gate said there was a forest fire in the southern section. It wasn't too serious, but they didn't have a lot of details. Later we found out it didn't affect any trails. We saw remnants of old forest fires on the southern section, but that was the next day.
The day started out clear with great views off to either side of the ridge.
We stopped at Big Meadows Visitor Center. The historical photos there were quite interesting. Once upon a time, the CCC's had their camp set up right in the area in this photo. Beyond that we took a short hike down to Dark Hollow Falls. I showed one image of it in my post from the road, but the processing abilities were limited. Here is another view.
The falls continue down below this too. Even on a weekday there were a number of visitors, but I waited for them before taking this image. It seems unusual to me to start a hike going down. Here in the White Mountains, we are always going up and then returning on the downhill path.
A view of Old Rag mountain to the east.
We turned off the ridge after the tunnel and dropped back down into the Shenandoah Valley on Hwy. 211.
Next, Skyline Drive part 2. Road trip #2Finally I have been able to return to Gettysburg. It seems to be such a solemn place. All the lives lost. You can see it was still early spring. The peach trees in the Peach Grove were just starting to blossom.
Little Round Top in the background.
A pair of bluebirds were in the closer tree. They are easily visible in the full-resolution image.
The tower on Little Round Top and views from the tower. In the photo of the tower, you can see the redbud in the center below the tower. The next day I was headed south again. Pennsylvania farmland.
An Old Order Mennonite (Groffdale Conference) meeting house.
The hand pump in the front yard is just above the "M". The sheds for the horses surround the building. There was only time for a quick view at the visitor's center at Antietam. It would have been nice to see more, but someone was waiting further south.
Next, Skyline Drive. Road trip #1So I have been back long enough to start going through my photos. As is often the case when I head south, I took the Taconic Parkway in New York State.
Along the parkway, I stopped at Lake Taghkanic State Park. It was really quiet since it was the off-season.
Some hidden, deserted picnic tables. Next it was on to southern Pennsylvania. Main St., Waynesboro.
An interesting house recently sold at auction. The nearby Renfrew Institute farm and park.
And then on to Emmitsburg, Maryland.
As I was photographing here I wondered, how close am I too the ocean? It smelled like low tide or at least a very strong smell of someone cooking fish. Then my friends told me that was from the flowers of the decorative pear trees. They are very pretty, but... Next will be Gettysburg. Greenville, South CarolinaWhile I was waiting for the threat of rain to pass before setting out on a cycle ride, I wandered around the park in downtown Greenville.
Then I set out for the town of Traveler's Rest on the Swamp Rabbit Trail north out of Greenville.
Here is where I had lunch with a Nehi peach soda.
The Fuji XF-1 was used for all of these. And the tablet was used for prepping as in the previous post. On the road
Is a roadtrip a good reason for sporadic blog posts? These photos were processed from RAW in the camera (D600) and then slightly edited in Photo Editor on an Android tablet before posting. Did the process work well enough? It is a little unwieldy. There will be more upon my return home.
First a view of the Taconic Parkway in New York State, then some scenery from Skyline Drive in Virginia.
