Southwestern MontanaAlong the road in southwestern Montana; enjoy the scenery with me.
The Madison River as it cuts its way through the hills in Manhattan, Montana. The river and Montana Hwy 84 wind their way down through the canyon. Notice the smoky skies?
The pass between Ennis and Virginia City -- that is Ennis down in the valley.
An 1885 log cabin originally built on a site 10 miles outside the city of Dillon, but now moved to this outdoor museum in the city.
One of the saddles from Frecker's Saddlery in Dillon. And a cattle guard on the freeway entrance I-15 on the south side of Dillon.
Late afternoon sun lights up the fields north of Dillon.
Beaverhead Rock, a landmark for Sacagawea with Lewis and Clark's expedition.
Ghost town - Comet, MontanaNext we visited the ghost town of Comet, Montana. Comet is up High Ore Road in the mountains north of Butte. These places do not necessarily have signs so it can be a little complicated to find them without a good map. At least one place in Comet is occupied. It looks like a bulldozer has done some work around the site. And, it is open range, as you may notice in one of the photos.
We did not explore the town very closely because we weren't sure what was private property, but resources online and in books may explain where you can go.
Not much left of this truck.
See the curious residents?
There has been an environmental cleanup at the site, but I wonder about the condition of these ponds below town. Maybe they're fine. Ghost town: Elkhorn, MontanaThis will be the first of at least three Montana ghost town posts. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed visiting them. First, Elkhorn, Montana which is in the mountains northeast of Butte.
The first views of town (above) and looking down on town from the cemetery road (below).
The hall was open and other buildings had signs giving their origins.
The old schoolhouse
On the road: North Dakota, MontanaInterstate 80 stretches on and on across North Dakota.
Sweetbriar Lake At a refueling stop, I spotted a sign for a "Fort Sauerkraut", so of course I had to investigate.
The view of Hebron, North Dakota from the old Fort Sauerkraut site.
Western North Dakota, and then: (There is more coming from North Dakota in a future post.)
Michigan's U.P.The second trip for the summer was out West. So here are a few images from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. First a view of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore from a viewpoint in Munising.
Views of the sun setting over Lake Superior from MI 28 between Munising and Marquette.
The towers in the background here are in Marquette.
This cookout on the beach was probably short-lived because of the oncoming thunderstorms. On the road next morning west of Marquette:
And finally Agate Falls.
