I hope you have all been able to get out and see comet NEOWISE.

This is one of my first attempts.

There is a new issue of Lake Living Magazine out and I have one photo in it. Also, the Founder's Day and Car Show in Paris Hill was cancelled this year obviously. We have a poster, but it will saved for 2021.

Cycling in Maine

June 30, 2020  •  2 Comments

Friends joined me to cycle a loop starting and ending in Andover, Maine.

East B Hill Road out of Andover had construction and includes some serious climbing.

Then the route turned onto Rte. 26 and headed south to Grafton Notch.

And then through the Notch.

And then down into the valley in Newry.

Then the route took US Rte. 2 East. And to go back to Andover we turned onto Rte. 5 north and then detoured through the Lovejoy Covered Bridge.

And then the rain started. For the last four miles back into Andover.

Into summer

Hungry?

After that rail trail ride I went up to Randolph Hill:

Yes, the clouds had started to break and now you can see Mt. Madison and close to the top of Mt. Adams. See the snow? That was June 13.

Haying.

Horseshoe Pond next:

And a thundercloud which did not bring rain to my location.

Thanks to those who have commented on my postings.

Cycling with lupines -- Northern New Hampshire

June 23, 2020  •  2 Comments

The Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail is a route across northern New Hampshire made up of connecting paved and gravel roads and rail trail. Well, to learn more, go to this site. It runs from Woodsville, New Hampshire on the Connecticut River to Bethel, Maine and there are extensions to go further. This time I just did and out and back from the Dolly Copp Rd. in Randolph out to the the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. From the people I shared the trail with (mountain bikers, horseback riders, walkers [one with llamas]) I heard of a bear sighting, a fawn, and beaver.

See the old railway pole. Along this stretch there were old railway buildings too.

This is the viewing platform on Cherry Pond.

On the return I took Valley Road in Jefferson to see more lupines.

If it weren't cloudy you would see the northern Presidentials here and maybe a little snow high up on those peaks.

This last one was taken at Appalachia.

Technical note: the trail surface was good enough for a gravel bike with 35 mm slick tires (Panaracer Gravelkings)

Livermore - Bear Notch Loop

June 09, 2020  •  2 Comments

A week later than the last post, I revisited Sawyer River Road and made a loop with the Kancamagus Highway and Bear Notch.

The road had been open until this point.

The trail across this bridge goes to Sawyer Pond.

And then you drop down to the Kancamagus side: this trail follows what once was a logging railroad.

The railroad crosses a swampy area with views of the mountains.

Yes, my feet got wet here, but I was to get more wet later.

That does look like old railroad ties down there.

Now what?

And eventually you come to the Swift River. It is recommended that you start from the Kancamagus side since it is close to the trailhead so that you don't arrive at the river and find you cannot cross, but of course I didn't do that.

There were people crossing before me, so I knew I could make it.  I used the bike as support against the current rushing over the ledge. It wasn't that deep, but the chain got wet.

Upstream was this small waterfall.

Then there was a headwind slowing down the ride down the Kancamagus Highway to Bear Notch.

And Bear Notch was still gated so I had it almost to myself.

Down in the valley you can see the village of Bartlett. That is my next waypoint. See the snow on Mount Washington?

Almost to Bartlett Village. And then it was northwest on the main road to the car. 27.1 miles for the loop.
